an examination of military and civilian decisions 
in Vietnam and their consequences

Dr. Edward J. Marolda is a prominent naval historian and an authority on the 
U.S. Navy’s involvement in the Vietnam War. He served as a U.S. Army officer 
in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970, directing combat resupply convoys in the
Saigon region. After his military service he joined the staff of the Naval 
Historical Center (now the Naval History and Heritage Command) in 
Washington D.C. and by the time of his retirement in 2008 held the positions 
of Director of Naval History (Acting) and Senior Historian of the Navy. His 
educational accomplishments include a BA in History from Pennsylvania Military 
College (1967), an MA at Georgetown University in European Diplomatic 
History (1971), and a Ph.D in American History at George Washington 
University (1990). He is an active member of the U.S. Commission on Military 
History, the Society for Military History and the North American Society for 
Oceanic History and has taken part in numerous historical activities in the United 
States and abroad. He currently teaches a course on the United States and China 
during the Cold War at Georgetown University. Dr. Marolda has authored, 
coauthored, or edited 15 books on the history of the U.S. Navy, with a focus on 
the Cold War in Asia, including Vol. II in the official series The United States 
Navy and the Vietnam ConflictBy Sea, Air, and Land: A History of the US Navy 
and the War in Southeast Asia; Carrier Operations in the Bantam Vietnam 
series;Operation End Sweep; and Ready Seapower: A History of the U.S. Seventh 
Fleet.

Dr. Marolda's illustrated presentation, "Strategic Direction of the Air War,"
will focus on how President's Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard M. Nixon and
their civilian and military advisors designed and conducted the costly and
ultimately unsuccessful air war against North Vietnam from 1964 to 1973,
an experience with relevance to current American overseas actions.
